Understanding the Basics of Home Renovation Grants

By: Guy Starbuck

All of us wish to stay in homes which are not just good looking but are also well done up. Home renovation and decor costs a lot of money! How nice it would be if only our dream homes could be financed by someone else. Do you think it is impossible? In fact, surprising as it may sound, home there are numerous local agencies, state governments and federal housing authorities who are ready to finance your home renovations and remodeling. It does not matter what economical status you belong to and which part of the country your home is in. There are real funds available for every home owner.

But there might be various conditions that could apply before you are granted such financial assistance. While some agencies fund development of some geographical areas of the country, others may give funds for preservation of some historical sites while others may part with funds for handicapped personnel or for renovating homes of low-income category of people. Then there are agencies who offer funds for renovating homes built before certain period of time or for homes which are situated in some specific areas of the city. One could also access funds for doing some specific home-repair jobs like insulation, roofing, plumbing, electrical repairs, siding, etc. Your aim should be to locate a specific agency or authority who will grant you funds which meet your specific requirement.

For instance, you could want to make your home more energy efficient. In this case you should contact either any local utility company, or any of the ‘green’ organizations or your local state authority to check whether they have any grant program for undertaking such jobs.

How often do we see some magnificent historical buildings and wonder whether it was possible to stay in these grand places, considering the amount of money that would be required to renovate it and make it livable once again. Your best option is to contact either the local or state historic commissions who can possibly offer help. Many of these authorities offer grants to home owners who wish to restore historic properties and bring it back to its original state of grandeur and glory.

We often come across situations in life where we have to provide accommodation to an elder of the family who can no longer take care of himself or herself. Not only has the person become dependent for mobility, but he or she also needs specially designed or remodeled bathroom and other facilities in the house. There are many organizations who offer specific grants for the disabled, the elderly and infirm which can assist you in remodeling an existing bathroom, add ramps, etc so that the senior most family member is not faced with any inconvenience while at home.

The most like question which might crop up is who is eligible for such home renovation grants? Practically any American citizen, above 18 years of age, who either owns or stays in rented accommodation and can meet the specific conditions as stipulated by the granting authority, can avail of such grants. To find out your own eligibility, simply fill up a short and simple questionnaire which would be usually followed by an official assessment of your requirement.

The basic requirements for availing such types of grant would largely depend on the specific granting authority as well as the amount of money that you are requesting. You might be asked to submit a detailed project plan, along with your budgetary requirement against each renovation. You might also be asked to submit your own financial standing, including federal income tax returns, your current financial monthly pay-outs, for a period of one to three years. The whole process might take anywhere between a few weeks to a year or sometimes even more.
